Proofreading, Copyediting, and Rewriting Services

Whenever you write a professional or academic text, your reputation is on the line. Your document must be flawless.

We provide all levels of editing for your specific needs:

  • Proofreading for documents with minor errors
  • Copyediting for documents that require significant corrections
  • Rewriting for documents that need an overhaul

For the best possible output, we consult the appropriate references for all three services: the latest dictionaries for spelling and word usage, grammar books for rules on grammar and spelling, the Internet for fact-checking, and so on. For style issues and usage guidelines, we refer to widely used style guides like The Chicago Manual of Style. We also work with our clients’ own style sheets if these are available and/or preferred.

PROOFREADING SERVICE involves checking for typographical errors (or more generally known as typos) in spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and formatting, as well as for apparent lapses in word usage, such as employing weather when the context clearly calls for whether.

Example: Alice is going to atend the Gala weather or not she finds the prefect outfit. Corrected: Alice is going to attend the gala whether or not she finds the perfect outfit.

Our proofreaders look for these minor yet obvious errors and make certain that these do not appear in the published book. In contrast with the copy editor, the proofreader is not concerned with improving the content of the text and does not impose stylistic revisions. Ideally, proofreading is done after copyediting as a final assessment to guarantee that the document is error free and ready for publishing.

If you’re confident that your document is orderly and well written, why go through proofreading? Well, we often read what we think we wrote instead of what is actually written. So chances are that we—the most meticulous of us included—cannot spot our own blunders, even the tiniest of them. Our proofreaders have the trained eye for this very task. Even if your document has already undergone copyediting, a second look to polish your text definitely won’t hurt.

COPYEDITING SERVICE focuses on the careful line-by-line checking for grammatical errors and ensures that spelling, punctuation, capitalization, word usage, syntax, and other issues adhere to primary references. Aside from these, minor to average factual errors are corrected. The goal is to apply as little change as possible to preserve the meaning, voice, and style of the original text, as well as to maintain internal consistency all throughout.

Example: Charlie and me had to go to the Mom and Pop Store down 8th st. to wench our thrist with some ice cold Coke‘a’cola.

Corrected: Charlie and I had to go to the mom-and-pop store down Eighth Street to quench our thirst with some ice-cold Coca-Cola.

Our copy editors also make suggestions on how to improve readability and remove ambiguity, omit uncalled-for words or phrases that may result in wordiness or redundancy, and cross-check the table of contents, figures, tables, and other data for consistency with the main text. For any material the copy editors themselves do not readily understand, queries are left for the authors to address.

Thus, copyediting takes more time and effort than proofreading. If you feel that your work needs more than a proofread or if you do not have a natural eye for catching spelling, punctuation, grammar, and syntax errors, then you need some copyediting done. More often than not, spell-checking alone won’t do. Also, although it’s always good to have a dependable and knowledgeable friend review your document in its entirety with a critical eye, it may not be enough. At inWrite, we offer top-notch line-by-line copyediting with a team of professional copy editors who are fully competent in all aspects of grammar and punctuation, so you can be assured of an excellent finish.

REWRITING SERVICE involves restructuring the text depending on its quality and/or the client’s liking, at times making it come across as though someone else wrote it. Paraphrasing, rewording, and removing unnecessary terms and/or phrases are done in great abundance. Unlike copyediting or proofreading, the preservation of the author’s voice or style is not prioritized.

Example:
The God of Small Things is the highlight of Arundhati Roy’s achievements. One of the more obvious things you’ll spot on the cover of this book is the golden circle at the bottom-right corner that reads “Winner of the Booker Prize.” The Booker Prize is the most prestigious literary award given to the most outstanding novel written in English by a citizen from the Commonwealth of Nations, Ireland, or Zimbabwe. And lo and behold, in 1997, The God of Small Things was the best; and Roy bagged the award with her fictional powerhouse. Apart from being her debut novel, it also takes the title of being her only novel. I’m not holding it against her or anything when I say that because I think The God of Small Things is a work of a lifetime, the stuff of legend.

Rewritten:
I consider the novel The God of Small Things to be Arundhati Roy’s greatest triumph, best exemplified when it won the 1997 Booker Prize, the most celebrated literary honor presented to the most outstanding novel written using the English language by someone from the Commonwealth of Nations, Ireland, or Zimbabwe. What’s all the more amazing is that not only is this her very first novel, it is also her only novel! This fact reinforces my opinion that The God of Small Things is a masterpiece of a lifetime, powerful enough to base legends on. Our rewriting service is recommended for documents with numerous errors that proofreading or even copyediting alone cannot fix. Writers who feel their write-ups require a slight tweak, a new spin, or considerable revamping may also benefit from rewriting.
